To coincide with UNESCO International Year of Light marking the 150th anniversary of James Maxwell’s Electromagnetic Theory of Light, the Scottish Government, Homecoming Scotland and the Orkney Science Festival commissioned a musical project to set Maxwell’s poems to music for the first time, along with several new compositions inspired by stories of his life and work.
The concert at Music at St Cyprian’s will bring this musical celebration to East Dunbartonshire in a fascinating glimpse into the life of this 19th Century physicist and unsung Scottish hero, James Clerk Maxwell, a man to science as Robert Burns is to poetry.
Born in Edinburgh in 1831 and descended from the Clerks of Penicuik, a brilliantly talented family which included the composer Sir John Clerk, James Clerk Maxwell wrote poetry and songs – romantic, mystical and humorous – written to be performed to the traditional airs and folk tunes of the day.
Singer-songwriter and arranger Andy Munro leads the musical ensemble, joined by his daughter, acclaimed folk & jazz vocalist Flora Munro, multi-instrumentalist woodwind player John Sampson, and folk musician Dave Elliot on accordion & fiddle.
Professor Tom Stevenson of the Scottish Museum of Communication will lead us through this musical story of Maxwell’s life and career.
